Meet New Jersey’s 2 most conservative lawmakers
The American Conservative Union has announced the 2018 recipients of its “Award for Conservative Excellence,” and the two top scorers represent Warren County.
That’s fitting, given Republicans outnumber Democrats in Warren County by a 2 to 1 margin, or 29,665 to 16,910 among registered voters as of the June 4 primary election.
The conservative group says it presented state Sen. Michael Doherty and Assemblyman Parker Space with its top ranking award for voting 90 to 100 percent on bills that focus on former President Ronald Reagan’s philosophy of the “three legged stool” of issues: 1, fiscal and economic: taxes, budgets, regulation, spending, healthcare and property; 2, social and cultural: Second Amendment, religion, life, welfare and education; and 3, government integrity: voting, individual liberty, privacy and transparency.

Republican Assemblymen for the 23rd District John DiMaio and Erik Peterson were presented with the second tier “Award for Conservative Achievement” for 80 to 89 percent voting records in the American Conservative Union’s scoring.
The union goes on, in its “2018 Winners Losers,” to single out 21 members of the state Senate and 44 members of the Assembly as part of a “Coalition of the Radical Left” for a ranking of 10 percent or less on the Reagan principles.
## ## As the New Jersey Senate highest rated conservative lawmaker for 2018, Doherty received a 96 percent ranking. Constitution,” Doherty said in a statement on the award. “If a bill may hamper citizens’ rights or heighten taxes, I will stand up and do what’s right for the people of New Jersey. My voting history speaks for itself I am proud to be a fiscally conservative leader in the great Garden State.”

Space says he earned the highest grades of any legislator in the state, earning the ACU’s top award for a fifth consecutive year; he has been honored every year he served in the Legislature.
“The American Conservative Union has long been known across the country as the leading voice of the conservative movement and I am honored they have recognized our work to lower the cost of government and opposing liberal social policies,” Space said in a statement. “Our approach stands in stark contrast to the massive new increases in taxes and spending that the Democrat leadership in the governor’s office and legislature are imposing on beleaguered taxpayers.”
The American Conservative Union is described as the nation’s oldest conservative grassroots organization. It expanded its ACU Congressional Ratings program to the New Jersey State Legislature in 2013, grading members on their votes on key conservative issues.
